What’s Wrong With This Square? (1)
At Daisy Chain we have been thinking about public space.
Wondering about their design purpose and use.
I went to a square in Belfast and gathered my thoughts.
I have questions.
What is wrong with this square?
Or is it just me?
Will anyone notice?
Will anyone mind?
Am I safe here?
Do public and private spaces feel different?
What happens at the edges?
Am I being watched?
Can I linger longer?
Was this space designed or did it just happen?
Who’s vision is this?
Is this somewhere to meet?
Or be alone?
Who gets to make the rules?
What’s it like after dark?
Does this feel like a shared space?
Is how we use public spaces affected by our history?
The troubles?
Or Covid?
What happens here?
What could happen?
How could this space be better?
What is wrong with this square?
